Solo in the City: Fun Outing Ideas You Can Do Alone in DC & the DMV

Washington, DC is a very social city but there’s plenty of ways to have fun as a party of one.

Whether you’re a local or just visiting, there are tons of things you can do in the Nation’s Capital by yourself. Check out this periodically updated list for ideas of things to do on your own.

Get moving at a meetup
Combine socializing with cardio with one of the area’s social groups focused on fitness. The Hike Crew and DC Run Crew are Black-led groups that regularly have free meetups. Pacers also hosts social runs and City Girls Who Walk gather to explore the city on foot (the good thing about social fitness groups is they often tend to reward your workout with a happy hour or other social event)

Take a mixology class
Become your own bartender and learn how to make cocktails (or mocktails).
Classes are offered at various places, including LYDIA ON H, DC Capitol Square Bar & Grill, and Urban Roast. Check out sites like Eventbrite for more options and special events that involve crafting cocktails.

Unleash your inner artist
Pick up some paint or pottery at an art class. ArtsClub has regular workshops dedicated to painting works in the style of famous artists and Smithsonian Associates offer a wide range of artistic classes that include mediums like drawing, painting, and photgraphy.

Do a DIY
Find a craft class and make your own candles, jewelry, and more. Many local options are Black-owned: Irie Essence is a candle making popup that regularly hosts workshops and Love Soultry provides handmade clay jewelry making.

Reach new heights at the Bouldering Project in Eckington
This indoor climbing gym has a 55-foot long wall known as “The Beast” and 34,714 square feet of climbing and fitness space. They also have co-working space available. Learn more about their climbing classes here.

Up your reps at an exercise class
DC has plenty of gyms and fitness studios for everything from boxing to barre. If you’re not ready to commit to a membership, try a drop in class at places like Orangetheory, [solidcore], and Rumble Boxing. Check out ClassPass to discover more options in the area and keep an eye out for free fitness events.

Find your balance at a yoga class
Like the exercise classes, there are plenty of yoga studios in the DMV, like Yoga District – there are also plenty of free classes like Unity Flow at Union Market and The Yards Park tends to host free sessions.

Taste wine for free at The Urban Grape
Go for a sip in Shaw at this Black and woman-owned wine store. They have weekly tastings on Thursdays and their themed After Brunch series on Saturdays are designed to keep the brunch vibe with free sips of interesting beverages, special guests, and pop ups by local makers. Check out their website for their schedule.

Go for a hike or bike along Georgetown’s C&O Canal
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and its towpath stretch 184.5 miles through Georgetown and into Cumberland, Maryland. The water view makes it a favorite for runners and cyclists, and great for picnics and nature walks.
